129. IMPULSE 1 (2004)

Scoring:

Cello Solo

String Orchestra.

Duration:

5-6 min.

Once I thought a lot about the Swedish composer Lars-Erik Larsson, and in particular the stack of concertinos (Opus 45), for many orchestral instrument solo and amateur orchestra, he wrote between 1954-47. "If he could, so can I", was my direct thought. This was in 1984, and I started the "Av Tankar"-serie (Av Tankar = Because of thoughts) for Solo Instrument and String Orchestra, starting of with No.1 for Cello (to Louise Agnani), No. 2 for Flute (to Ulrika Ekblad), and No. 3 for French Horn (to Madeleine Dahlberg)... And after that... Complete silence!!! I did not get any further with the project, and it went into a kind of concious slumber. After 13 years sleep, I once again started the project, this time to re-compose the three pieces in to a bit more (at least for me personally) playable (both technical and compositorical) style. This time starting backwards, with "Av Tankar 3", transforming it to "Impulse 3". In 2004, I transformed "Av Tankar 1" to "Impulse 1", and "Av Tankar 2" is yet to be transformed to "Impulse 2". And after that...? It can be, that I complete my original intention, to compose a brother-serie of compositions to the Lars-Erik Larsson serie. But future will show. Keep in touch!!

Desperatissimo... A VERY slow song... How "minorish" kan a Major key get? In slow tempo, Major keys are at least as sad as minor. This set of pieces prove that statement very well (H. Gorecki proved that already in 1976 with his 3. Symphony, but it is nice to continue that proving business...)!

In january 2006 I was hired to be marimba soloist at the New Years Concert with the Salon Orchestra in Skjern (Denmark) by their conductor Lis Theilgaard. This was really nice, and we played some mallet classics together, and I also played my own "Space" for Marimba Solo (1984, Opus 4). But I also wanted to contribute my part to the not very large (I do not know if there is any before this...) repertoire, so I asked if I could compose a new piece for this occasion. That was accepted, and I started... several months later. In fact, I got the impulse to the piece when the Vienna Philharmonic started their last encore at their New Years Concert from Vienna in 2006 the Radetzky-March. I was from the start (in september 2005, when Lis T. asked me to be soloist) clear with the fact, that the piece should be a polka. But the Vienna concerto started the composing process. Before that, I was blank. I also used the orchestras second conductor as lead soloist, a very funny & nice trumpet player (originally from Norway) named Thor-Erik Langseth, to do some serious wailing on stage with me (together with the rest of the orchestra), in the "Corpo Scossone Molto"-sessions.

This piece continue the "worldwide on stage bodybanging movement", which I started in my piece "Fanfare for three" (2003, Opus 122) for Recorder, Trombone/French Horn & Viola (all muted, including the Viola player).

Composed and dedicated to Skjern Salonorkester (Denmark).
